The Society

Biomimetics New Zealand Inc is a not-for-profit society who are dedicated to support of interdisciplinary biomimetic research in, or relating to, New Zealand. Our principal objectives are:

dialogue — facilitate interdisciplinary communication between scientists, designers and engineers;
research — encourage and foster research employing biomimetic principles;
education — provide advocacy for biomimicry as an overarching theme in education.

Membership of the Biomimetics NZ society is open to anyone interested. The full society rules are available here (in PDF format). An application form is available here (in PDF format).

The society also maintains an online community for news, discussion and communication. It is not necessary to be a member of the society to contribute to the activities in the community web site.

The logo

The society's logo includes seeds from the native New Zealand pohutakawa tree. This iconic tree is typified by it brilliant display of bright red flowers during the Summer (December). However, the seeds were specifically chosen for the logo because in typical biological fashion each seed has a notably unique shape despite the obvious common design.
